This study carried out an analysis of the changes in land use and occupation of the Ondas River Basin, State of Bahia, through the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing techniques. To perform the analysis of changes in land use and occupation of the Ondas River Basin, supervised classification of satellite images of two different periods (1975 and 2015) was carried out. In the supervised classification the Support Vector Machine classifier (SVM) and images of the Landsat 1 (scenario of 1975) and Landsat 8 (scenario of 2015) were used. In the scenario of 1975 there was the predominance of the native vegetation with the registration of some burned areas. Already in the scenario of 2015 a significant reduction of the native vegetation area was identified due to the agricultural expansion in the region, which already occupies 45% of the area of the basin. Agriculture predominates in the western region of the basin. This is mainly because it is a flat area with high rainfall levels, which allows the development of crops such as soybean, corn and cotton, which predominate in this region. The SVM classifier presented a good result in the classification of the use and soil cover of the Ondas River Basin, making it possible to verify that the basin underwent an intense modification in its use and occupation of the soil, with the expansion of agricultural areas to the detriment of native vegetation areas, which can cause numerous impacts and imbalances in the environment.
